Another Night, Another Shooting

In Blogging by rafranzdavis3 Comments

The other day my son told me that he dreamed of being shot by the police. It wakes him up at night. This is the world that he lives in…the one that all of our sons and daughters are growing up in. It’s 2:45am and less than a day of learning of Alton Sterling, my son gets to learn about a new name…Philando Castile. I’ve been talking to my son about “the rules” for years now and even more so as he is learning to drive. I’m a spiritual woman so I pray  and am encouraged by those who also …

Passion Fueled Connections of ISTE2014

In Blogging, Professional Growth by rafranzdavis1 Comment

For me, ISTE 2014 was more than about coming face to face with educators that I’ve connected with via twitter. It was also bigger than being on stage to give one of the opening ignite speeches. It was 100% about re-igniting my passion as a creator and more importantly as the creative director of my own life. (more on this later) You see, as of late, I’ve been in a bit of a struggle with myself over my choice to join the ranks of the edtech community. As a die hard math educator, I’ve just been feeling a bit blahhh …

Self-Hosted WordPress Tips: Choosing a Theme, Designing and Chrome Extensions to Help

In Blogging by rafranzdavis0 Comments

One of the highlights of my rebranding of all of my social spaces has been receiving positive feedback from visitors and collaborators. I love that people actually think that my blog was a big ordeal to design. It was not. I run a self-hosted wordpress blog which means that I run the wordpress software on my servers. It’s a choice that I made once I understood how blogging worked. The beauty of self-hosting is that you can choose your own theme or in my case, framework, and customize it however you choose. My blog is running the Headway theme, which …

Make Your Blogs Interactive with Embedly (My New Favorite Blogging Tool)

In Blogging, EdTech by rafranzdavis0 Comments

I love when I run across tools that are quite useful…completely by accident. I found embedly as I was working on a post about digital storytelling with instagram for secondary students. (posting shortly after this one) Embedly is a tool that allows users to embed any linkable content to a website with an interactive responsive card that is then easily sharable across networks. I no longer have to grab an image, edit it and upload it to my blog. I simply paste the link into the blank on Embed.ly. A card is generated that I can then edit further to …

Blogging Homework: Making These Things Not So Predictable and More Fun

In Blogging by rafranzdavis0 Comments

I’ve been known to delete people from facebook who tag me in those ridiculous “chain things” so when this “sunshine award” started, I will admit to some major eye rolls at the idea. However, I’ve had  fun learning more about each person as they posted their “11 things”. I took some time to visit a familiar tool and try a newer one with doing these Q&As. I’ve mentioned each person that I could remember in the Haiku Deck Here are my 11 Visual Random Facts Created with Haiku Deck, the free presentation app for iPad For @Sarahdateechur I used Tapestry’s …

Know Your Audience: Research is the key to knowing and even understanding your audience. Have an interest in your students not only engaging in what you are teaching, but once they can see that you are interested in them, you’ve just built the best means to communicate your message. Find the Connection: Once you have an understanding of your audience and have built the bridge to communicating, every experience that involves them learning should focus in making that bridge stronger. The student learning experience starts before they come into the classroom and doesn’t end. Make it memorable: Branding is about …

Why Personal Branding Should Matter

In Blogging, Professional Growth, Social Media, Uncategorized by rafranzdavis0 Comments

Prior to yesterday, the marketing genius that helped me to complete the style transformation of my blog did not have a web presence beyond Facebook or Instagram which was odd considering his line of work…social marketing. He does amazingly brilliant work but his reach was limited to those that he was connected to through those two platforms only. We had a long conversation about what his intentions were for his business. We talked about the impact that he could have on others just by sharing what he did and maybe even blogging which would provide unique insight into social marketing …

Self-Hosting with WordPress: Plugins for Interacting with Readers

In Blogging by rafranzdavis0 Comments

One of the benefits of self-hosting my own wordpress blog is having the ability to utilize plugins which can add more interactivity for readers. I tend to get pretty scientific when it comes to plugins. The right ones can definitely add to the overall message of a blog. The wrong ones or too many, can affect loading time which will almost certainly impact viewership. Below is the collection of the plugins that power my blog and also were used to create my widget area. 1. Jetpack I like to think of jetpack as the “ultimate” of all plugins as it …
