My DENpiphany #DENsi2013

20130719-092903.jpgWhen I arrived at the Discovery Ed Summer Institute Sunday, I had no idea about the week that lied ahead. As a new attendee, I mistakenly categorized DENsi in the same box as every other event that I have ever attended. Just to be clear, DENsi is NOTHING like any event that I have or will ever attend.

When you attend an event such as DENsi, you need to leave your invisible “judgemental hat” at home. There is no room for that here. You will do things that you will never do at home, like pretend that you are flying the Starship enterprise. You will eventually join in on the downstairs late night games. You will sing songs that were written before your birth. And you will also put your DEN finger in the air and yell “wooo” even when sound isn’t necessary. You will do this because by the end of the week, you will “GET” what “THE DEN” is really about.

Somewhere along the way…you will learn! You will learn more in a week with your new DEN friends than you will at any other event. Even with the most fantastic media using teachers in North America, it’s still not about that.

DENsi is not about the technology. It’s about the people, the relationships, the laughter, the long drives to meet face to face, the skype calls between classrooms, the shared ideas, the passion projects…again…the people…brilliant people.

People ask me all the time how to really “use” THE DEN. The first thing that you need to know is that the DEN can’t be used. You ARE the DEN.

So, my DENpiphany is this…

Get your butts to events! Share with people…any one with an ear! Log in events! Learn the DEN finger & maybe even the shark dance…there is one!

And finally….when the DENsi application information is posted, submit a video and apply.

Your life will be changed forever for it.

Mine is.
